Gay Bar
Ho hum, another day.
Guess I’ll go out and mow the lawn.
Met the guy next door,
whom the neighbors treat like a leprechaun.

plays chess.
He is also gay.
Everyone in the ‘hood
wishes he’d go away –

I must confess.

he move away,

I play chess?
One day while pitted
against each other we learned we’d both be
in San Francisco on the same day.
He said: come to a gay bar with me.
As we entered
everyone
in the bar emitted
catcalls,
hoots, and whistles – such an accolade
for a couple so misfitted.
It turns out he was “cute”,
and so all attention centered
on him. I either wasn’t there
or was other-gendered.
It differed from a straight bar on several counts:
nobody was called a fruit,
it was overly boisterous and noisy,
and the camaraderie was absolute!
